Classy Teachers

Only as an adult did I realize that some of my teachers at PS 90 were from very different strata than those of us working-class kids. My 4th-grade teacher, Mrs. Flynn, lived in a private home in Bronxville (a very upscale town then and now). My 5th-grade teacher, Ms. Berdan, lived on the corner of Central Park West and 81st St., next to the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. Once, during a class trip to the museum, she left us with our parent chaperones while she ran up to her apartment (probably to use the bathroom). I don't imagine Bronx public school teachers today being able to afford living in either of those places.
