Two-Family Homes With Shared Driveways Return to topicsPost to this topic

They were in many, MANY Bronx neighborhoods! I grew up at 2731 Cruger Avenue with a driveway shared by 2733 Cruger Avenue in the Allerton/White Plains Road neighborhood. Where was your driveway and house located?

My neighborhood had no private houses with driveways, shared or not. Only apartment houses, block after block. To me growing up, people who lived in private houses were rich.

Hi, Ellery

My Cruger Avenue block had only one corner apartment building at Arnow Avenue. All the other houses between Allerton and Arnow Avenues were two family homes. My house was one of TWO attached houses, each with a top floor and ground floor "railroad" apartment. There were two addresses: 2729 Cruger Avenue and 2731 Cruger Avenue. A driveway was shared by my house (2731) and 2733 Cruger Avenue. Thanks for responding!

I forgot to mention that my house and the attached house next door were under ONE ROOF. Both homes had sun parlors facing the front on each floor, as well as big stoops leading out from the front doors. There was also a side door entrance on each house, about midway up the driveways. All the THREE buildings from 2729 Cruger Avenue to 2739 Cruger Avenue had 2 family homes with TWELVE families who shared driveways with their neighbors. Those buildings were brand new in 1924.. a hundred years ago! My paternal grandparents moved into 2731 Cruger Avenue that year and were the first occupants, including my Dad, to live there!

Regards,
Sammy
