THEY were outdoors and you easily touch their trunks

Didn't know the elephants like bread? As I recall, you could get pretty close to the elephants trunk in their "house" indoors but not outdoors? Pretty sure there were elephant "food" dispensing machines in the elephant house where you paid 10 cents for a handful of pellets to feed the elephants. Were you feeding them the bread indoors or outdoors? People would feed the ducks bread in their pond near the Southern Blvd/181st entrance to the zoo. Also I remember people feeding the goats in their enclosure, closer to the Boston Road/180th street entrance to the zoo. The people would give them anything and they would eat it (like paper bags and newspaper.) Yep, Those were the good old days!!!

Starting in 1959, when I was 8 years old, when Passover came around I had the task of getting rid of all the bread we had at home. To accomplish this, living 3 blocks from the Boston Road entrance to the Bronx Zoo, I had to take the bread there, so I could feed the elephants. Feeding them one slice at a time, they would grab the slice with their trunks. These days it would and could never be done. It was fun watching how they would sometimes use to push another elephant's trunk to the side so yhey could grab the slice for themself
