Many things happened when I was a high school senior at Taft. It was 1965, and I recall a demonstration in front of the army recruiting center on Fordham Road against the Vietnam War, the first of many. That summer, the Beatles arrived, and so did the Voting Rights Act, followed by the riots in Watts. Malcom X was assassinated. The following spring, my family moved from the Bronx to Yorktown Heights.

"California Dreamin'" came out that year. They played it a lot on WMCA Good Guy radio. It was my fave for a long time.

About 1974 we moved from the BX to Yorktwon Heights on Allan Ave for a a few years. Today my nephew, also from the BX lives in Yortwon Heights. A nice town in beautiful country.

Interesting that you recall an anti-war demonstration in 1965. In 1965, not that many people questioned the war. It was only later on, when we realized that we couldn't win, that sentiment turned against the war. At any rate, I prefer to remember the good things about 1965, like some of the songs, such as "Wooly Bully," Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Herman's Hermits, the Temptations and the Four Tops, etc.

We moved from an apartment on Arnow Ave in the Bronx to a house on Baldwin Road in Yorktown. It was like a different planet. My dentist made the same move and was a neighbor but kept his office in the Bronx.

I never saw a vietnam demonstration in the Bronx but there was one in Times Square in '65. I was 16 and had no idea what it was about. I learned pretty quickly when I turned 18.

In 67-68 there were anti war protests going on at The Bronx campus of NYU. Also support for black panther radicals that were jailed. I remember seeing spray painted on a handball court wall Free Bobby, Free Huey and not understanding what it meant until a few years later. It referred to black panthers Bobby Seale & Huey Newton. Turbulent times.
