Yes, it's a sad loss. The Mayfair on Wallace and the Mayflower on Barnes were enormous twin apartment buildings that comprised the entire block between Williamsbridge Road and Arnow Ave. The Mayflower was across the street from the Jewish Center of Williamsbridge, a conservative temple that served the neighborhood when I lived there.

Actually, the building was on Wallace and Arnow. It was a huge fire, 5 alarms, the top 2 floors are basically destroyed. It's called the "Mayfair" building. I personally have no history with the building or anyone who lived there, still, it's a terrible thing.

I didn't live there but I know that spot well. We used to swipe fruit from the back door of the grocery on the corner.
