Was the ever really such a person as a truant officer in the Bronx?

There was always talk among my buds about the truant officer who will catch you if you cut school and you might get sent to reform school. Considering how many times we collectively cut and never encountered him, I'd say either he was a myth or not very good at his job.

I don't think so. I cut school on Wednesdays and traveled to a TB sanatorium in Valhalla, NY.
One day I was sent for in school (principal ? don't remember) and I was asked who wrote the
notes to say I was sick. I said "my mother" ........... from behind me came a loud voice,
I DID NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No truant officer, worse, my mother.
