You've gone TOO FAR BACK regarding the origin for the name of the TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE. The name comes from the body of water the bridge crosses. Given the distance from the shore of WESTCHESTER COUNTY to the shore of ROCKLAND COUNTY, the area of the body of water was so large it was called the TAPPEN ZEE [SEA],
