That was the GMC H-6 Series, called the "New Look". Those "clamshell" seats, were original to this model.
Back in 1985, these buses were cycled through a firm in Chicago named Blitz.
They overhauled these buses and made modifications as per NYCTA requirements.
One modification was removal of the clamshell seats as Ace describes, and installation of the more conventional aisle seats.
A retrofitted bus was called a "Blitz". The fastest way to discern a "Blitz" from an original GMC New Look was to peak in & see if it had clamshell seats or not!
They were slowly phased out of service as newer buses were bought. They pretty much were gone from NYC streets by the mid 1990's. In the end, the Bronx was probably one of the last boroughs to employ these buses in service.
