Next door to me a group of teens got together and formed a band, "The Whales". The groups lead singers father was superintendent of the apartment building, there home base was one of the basement's storage rooms, designated as a fallout shelter.
When they were practicing, you could hear the music resonating up the alley onto the street. Some off us kids would venture into the basement & listen from a room adjacent to where they would practice. They had a couch & a few chairs set up, and they did not mind us hanging out. I do recall the Parks Dept. paid them for a gig one summer night at the Reservoir Oval Park, between Bainbridge & Gun Hill. The Parks Dept. had an event called family night. They opened the evening by playing, and afterwards as twilight fell, it was followed up with a movie. The movie that shown after "The Whales" performance was "The Russians are Coming". I think that was their 15 minutes of fame. They played a lot of material that was their own, with a few cover's thrown in. Their style of rock, to my recollection, was similar to "Grand Funk Railroad".
