Not sure if this is political or not. My father had a job working as an interviewer doing surveys. He'd phone people and ask them questions about various topics or products. I remember during the 1960 Presidential election he commandeered the phone booth (remember those?) in the Bedford Park D train station . My mother and I had to stand in the booth while he ran to the nearest polling place to ask exiting voters for whom they had voted. He then came to the booth and called the results of his in person interviews in to his company. I believe he worked for Harris Research Company. They still do polling today. I also remember making faces at the people as they passed the booth. Today, no one would answer an unknown caller. But, in those years you had no way to know who was calling, and once he got someone on the phone, they usually answered the survey questions. The presidential polling was in person though, that was an important difference.
