The Allerton Avenue/White Plains Road neighborhood was my "small town" where the following five places gained a tremendous amount of local fame: Fenster`s (Moishe`s) Appetizing Store with its "nickel pickle" barrels that lined the sidewalk in front on Allerton Avenue, White Castle on Boston Road which was perhaps the most popular one in The Bronx, Joe Tuckman`s Department Store on Allerton Avenue, and last but not least, the famous Allerton Avenue "COOPS" on Bronx Park East between Allerton and Arnow Avenues. The "COOPS" were among the city`s very first coopertive apartment complexes dating back to the early 1920s.
