It was never as bad as it is today-- We'd walk out onto the COOL fragrant (boxwoods, newly hosed) stoop with Nonna in the COOL of the morning - then walk to Arthur Ave and if it got hot (which it did) we'd stop for a Lemon ice. We PROBABLY took the bus back to keep cool, cuz we had lots of packages including "demised" chickens and (rarely, cuz Nonna made her own) pizza dough. I remember one awful time at Orchard Beach when I got sick frm the heat, finally was able to get home, and lay in bed with a cold compress on my head.... Years later I ended up in a Red Cross tent in Not-New York (Balteemore) with worse.... So even back then heat was not to be trifled with.
