The Bronx Zoo in the fifties was a wonderful place to go and I used to enjoy roaming the place. But I am struck by the difference in our modern treatment of the animals. One example will suffice: do you remember trying to walk through the hall that housed the lions and tigers when they were indoors. The cages were impossibly small and confines; plus, the stench was so overpowering that I remember having to hold a hanky over my nose while walking through. Cages were hosed down and there were plenty of puddles and damp spots where the cats were forced to sit. Today, we have a far better approach toward habitat and healthy conditions for zoo exhibits.
