I’m 93 years old and after I left the Bronx in 1947, I’ve spent most of my life either flying airplanes or sailing ships at sea. Your recollection of “Classon Point” has hit me sharply, because when I was a really young kid in the Bronx, my folks took me on the Classon Point ferry virtually every couple of weeks each summer as we went “to the beach” where many of my relatives had cottages. The Whitestone bridge put the ferry out of business, of course. To this day I can vividly recall standing aft on the ferry watching what my Dad called the wake “buttermilk” and through th years, I have watched “buttermilk” wakes in each of the oceans and seas of the planet recalling the Classon Point ferry in 1936.
