I went to visit a building where we lived and my dad was the super in Flushing,Queens(we lived there shortly before moving to the Bronx). I knocked on the door of our old apartment and a nice lady who was actually a home health aide of the current resident answered the door. I respectfully kept my distance and explained to her the I lived in this apt.50 years earlier and I'd liked to see the inside. Unfortunately the person she was taking care of was bedridden and she couldn't give me permission, I told her I understood and thanked her for at least allowing me to tell my story which she thoroughly enjoyed. The apt. was located on the ground floor and the long hallway leading up to the apt. looked so much smaller than it did when I was 3 years old, lol. The complex (Mitchell Gardens) is still up and running and as beautifully kept as it was when I was a child. Don't be afraid to knock on the door.
