Hi, Ellery!

I must have been about three years old in 1942 when I was told that the fire hydrant in front of my house was called a "Johnny Pump". The name has stuck with me and I think of it as "an old friend " because of its location. I just researched it on "google" and learned that the nickname originated in New York City (especially in Manhattan and Brooklyn) and became known in all the five boroughs before AND during my growing up years in my Allerton/White Plains Road neighborhood. Hopefully, we`ll hear from other "old timers" like me, who remember the fire hydrant`s nickname, "Johnny Pump".

Many thanks, Ellery for responding! I always enjoy reading your posts.

Sammy
