On page 55 of "Building the Independent Subway" by Frederick Kramer is a cutaway drawing of the 167th Street intersection with the Grand Concourse. It shows the street level, then one flight down is the mezzanine level. One flight lower is the lower mezzanine where the subway runs and one level below that is the 167th Street underpass where you can get a trolley (this was done in the thirties).
