Having spent the first 38 years of my life in NY I can, without a doubt, say in many ways New Mexico is a far better place than the BX of today. Space. We have plenty of that. Views, mountains, lakes, and the open road within a few miles of any home in Albuquerque. The price of homes here are easily in the price range of any working class person. Real estate taxes are also very low. If you're into skiing or mountain climbing that's within a 5 miles from most areas. Though we did have access to museums and Manhattan's night life back then it was a chore to get there. Here all museums and live shows are an easy drive with ample free parking. Now for the negatives: Our schools rank the worst in the USA, our poverty rate is also near the top in the US and crime has become an everyday topic of conversation. We have liberal judges who have swinging doors for offenders with many priors. Growing up in the 40's and 50's in the Bronx I didn't see the level of crime or disrespect for authority that we witness here all too often. We vote to try to change that and keep our heads down. Overall it still is an easy way of life compared to the BX when I grew up.
