As you point out, that may define Fieldston today, but back in the late 1820's Fieldston was a 270+ acre parcel purchased (and named) by Major Joseph Delafied. It stretched east/west from Van Cortland Park (Rte 9 was the border) to the Hudson. Over the years, the original estate was parcelled out. 13 acres of what remained of Fieldston was donated to Columbia University by the heirs of Delafield back in the mid 1960's.
Historically speaking, the Delafield estate of Fieldston was the heart of what would define Riverdale for years to come, and up to this day...but that is another story!
