Marcantonio was not a Communist as such, but was pretty close to it. Apparently, he was going to break with the pro-Soviet elements, to save his political career, just before he died. He probably came enamored of the Soviet Union during the war, when they were our allies, and was unable to see that things had changed and that the Soviets were bent on an aggressive path in Eastern EUrope. On the domestic front, he did a lot of good things, like trying to help the low-income Puerto Ricans who were then beginning to move into East Harlem. He was also tight with the mob, apparently.
