I lived a 10 minutes walk from the zoo and worked there during the summers of 1945-6. This how the seals were fed. You climbed up a short ladder to the stand where a young lad had a load of fish. you gave him some money and he gave you a fish in a small shovel. You then threw the fish into the water for the seals. The thing was that the young lads who had that station would cut the fish in half. Where did half the money go? Hmm. The sodas---The bottles were opened and poured into a paper cup with ice. There was soda left in the bottle. After about 3 sales there was enough soda to fill another cup. Profit. Hot dogs---the delis in the neighborhood did a good business by selling frankfurters to some lad who worked the grill at the stand. His personal franks were sold among the official ones. More profit. They also became very proficient in giving wrong change. Lot of profit. I am sure there is a Statute of Limitations so my co-workers are in the clear.
