Remember wooden box scooters? They'd be impossible to be built today for the simple reason that all of our groceries now come in cardboard boxes! Not so in the fifties. Grocers were all too glad to be rid of the wooden crates that vegetables were shipped in. All you needed after that was a little ingenuity: a piece of two by four, to which you attached at each end part of a skate that had been separated. Then, you could use two pieces of scrap wood nailed at a forty-five degree angle to make handles, and you were off and running. Some of us painted 'racing' numbers on the front. One resourceful kid in the neighborhood hooked up a battery inside the crate and had two small headlights for twilight running. We didn't go to a store to buy a scooter; we just used our ingenuity and used what materials we could cobble together. Good times! Reference ID: BX90569
