In the Norwood section of the Bronx where I grew up, my building did not have an elevator. Friends from my building & I would delight in visiting the surrounding elevator buildings (especially on hot summer days) to catch a ride or two or three to the top floors & down. What a luxury! Pushing the call button, hearing the click of the relays, the whir of the motors, and peering into the elevator shaft through the door glass when possible to catch a glimpse of the counterweight and its cables as it passed you by!
Otis Elevators were marvels of their time! I liken them to the old Boeing B-17 bombers of nearly the same vintage. By the time I was running around exploring neighborhood elevators, these units were already in service for 40+ years.
