That weird you mentioned was to hang clothes to dry.
The bathroom we had in the 1950's had a box over the toilet with a pull-chain that was used to flush the toilet. After the flush water would fill the box again to wait for the next flush.

Under the window in the kitchen there was a metal box with a door where my mother would store potatoes and the like.
