In the very early thirties, when I was little, my Mom always took me shopping with her on West 231st Street and Broadway. What must have been the Putnam line used steam locomotives which travelled along tracks that went under West 231st street a couple of hundred yards east of Broadway. I clearly remember standing on the street beneath which a steam “choo-choo” spewed smoke and ash and a great roaring to my (at first) fear and (later) great glee.
