Our school was in a mainly white neighborhood, but we had the Marble Hill projects (which itself was about 80 percent white in my day, before it began to change in the mid-1960s). So our elementary school was about 85 percent white, maybe 15 percent Black and Hispanic (in those days, Puerto Rican). In those days, however, we didn't just think of ourself as "white." We thought ouf ourselves as Irish, Jewish, Italian, etc. We were Irish, Jewish, Italian first, white second.
