This interchange has brought back memories of the seemingly interminable subway ride from Van Cortland to Chelsea and the books that made the trip memorable and pleasant. In those days, an author named Howard Pease was grinding out stories of the sea and sea captains and I always remember those rides for the books I read so avidly. I started down the road to priesthood after Hayes, but gave it up after a five-year try and with the Korean War in full swing, I had to answer the call. Guess where I ended up thirty years later – Master, Steam and Diesel, all tonnages all oceans...maybe the Broadway subway (“Number 1 Line” is it now?) had something to do with it.
