St. Helena's grammar school was operating on split session. My half of the schedule was from noon until 4. My classmate and good buddy Jack O'Connell would walk home together each day, stopping at an Odell St. tavern along the way. We would halt at the entrance to inquire about the score of the ball games. On October 3 we got the news that Brooklyn was leading 4-1. By the time I got home to my Parkchester apartment, a mere 3 blocks and 5 minutes away, I was greeted by my sister.

"They're carrying Bobby Thompson off the field. Everything is crazy."

The tv was on but all I saw was chaos at first. How could the Giants in a matter of a few minutes have scored 4 runs, especially against Don Newcombe ? Everyone knows the answer.

BTW Jack O'Connell attended St. Helena grammar school, graduating in 1955 & Mount St. Michael class of '59.He became a missionary Oblate and was prematurely killed in a jeep accident in Peru)
