Around 1950 or so, my grandfather had a set called a Fada. It was in a wood cabinet and had sort of a circular screen with the sides flat. Large power consuming vacuum tubes and a heavy metal chassis.
The channel selector was a clunky dial type VHF CH 2-13 only.
The "snap" eventually developed in that set as well. The result of a built up high voltage charge discharging to a grounded chassis.
The old cathode ray picture tubes could build up a 10kv or higher charge long after the set was turned off.
