November 9, 1965 - The Great Northeast Blackout. At about 5:30 PM, the city went dark. I was on the way home from work in Manhattan on the D train - it just passed the 174-175 street station when the lights went out. My stop was next, Tremont. After about an hour or so, the doors were forced open and me, and hundreds of others were led out and walked along the tracks to ladders which led up onto the Grand Concourse.
From there, I walked to my building on East Tremont Avenue. There were some men directing traffic on the Concourse with flashlights. After being without power for 12 hours, everything was slowly getting back to normal on Wednesday morning. November 10th.
