I remember The Floating Hospital from the 1950's. It was docked at 34th Street on the East River and was towed by a tug boat when it ventured out on the river. Daily during the summer it would go south toward the Statue of Liberty and turn around and return to 34th Street or it would go north to the Harlem River and pass through Spuyten Duyvil to enter the Hudson River and go south to join the East river and proceed north to it's 34th Street dock.
Most of the families on those trips as best as I can remember had at least one of the children afflicted with a serious disease such as polio. The staff on the Floating Hospital worked with that child while the rest of the family enjoyed a day out.
