Actually back then (1960's) we only had about three "civilian" teachers at St. Helena. They were usually part timers. Music, art and dance.

Some of the older nuns were downright sadistic. By the late '60's it got better. The younger nuns were more liberal thinkers.
Today the school would get sued if a nun even yelled at a kid.
