Sam's candy store on the corner of East 176th street and Anthony avenue. Burt was behind the counter and made great egg creams and chocolate malteds. Louis (Looey) was near where school supplies, spaldeens, baseball cards, etc. were kept on shelves behind glass doors. Before we bought a spaldeen, we held two at the same height, dropped them at the same time and the one that bounced the highest was the one we bought. Many landed on the roof of P.S. 28 while playing "strikeouts" in the schoolyard. We then chipped in whatever loose change we had to put together 19 cents for a new ball. Burt sometimes came to the schoolyard. He had a great curveball. Almost nobody could get a hit off him. It was three of us against him - gave us six outs instead of two.

Sam , the owner usually stayed towards the back of the store and watched everything that was going on. If we hung around too long at the comic book rack, he'd throw us out! In the spring, the Duncan Company sent representatives to most of the candy stores in the city to demonstrate all the tricks that could be done with their yoyo. I had a Duncan with a Cheerio string.

Great memories.
