Southern Blvd. served two main purposes. For many of us who lived in the East Bronx, the stretch near us was our local "Broadway with stores and movies. I lived on Tiffany St. so I used the local strip mentioned by others, blessed with 3 movie houses mentioned by others (the Star, Lowe’s Boulevard and Spooner). People who lived further north (say close to Tremont Ave.) had other local stretches of this East Bronx "Broadway". It was also the major north-south route to pick up cross town trolleys to other places. It was my gateway (going north) to the Zoo and Botanical Gardens; I would take it to the Tremont Ave. Trolley to Boy Scout meetings and take it to its last stop going north to transfer to a trolley going to Yonkers. Whe I got older, I would take it south to the 145th St. crosstown trolley to go across the bridge to Manhattan to attend City College. Bruckner Blvd., on the other hand, was the bus (not trolley) route to Pelham Bay Park and then to Orchard Beach (the latter often called by a different name that changed Orchard to another name that referred to a well-known product of horses.)
