This string ties in with the last one I posted. In the day we had activities and means to feel that the muggy weather wasn't going to kill us. However, the nights were brutal. Tossing and turning through the night dripping wet and trying to find a cooler, dryer area on a pillow. Finally, I had enough of that. I was about 18 in 1959 and had money in the bank. My parents refused to pay for any ac so I bought one for their bedroom. A Freidrich (sp?) for $ 300. from a shop near Fordham and Jerome. The installer came and said "I can't do it because your wiring is too old." For $ 75.00 more he hooked up the wire via the backyard pole and we were good. When the landlord heard this he told me to not do anything like that without asking him first. In the end my Dad did not like to sleep in the room. He was thin and said it was too cold. I slept in the other bed in the room with my mom. That ac lasted over 20 years without a problem. Don't know where it ended up after we all moved from Gleason.
