When you lived in projects like Parkchester, as I did, the brick buildings slowly soaked up the heat of the day and were just as slow to release it. No room size air conditioners were permitted. As a result, many residents took to the benches around the ovals in the evening, waiting for the air to cool off in the buildings.
Like other Bronxites of our time, we had to depend on fans in our apartment, which did a great job of blowing the hot air around.
