I was just a year ahead of you. Probably bumped into you in the narrow halls. I had one of those part-time jobs after school---messenger. Always had money in my pocket. Also worked in the Bronx Zoo during the summers. I lived 10 minutes away. My grandparents came over about 1905. My mom and one aunt were born on the Lower East Side. Grandparents then went back to Europe, WW1 broke out, immigration closed, 1923 Act. My mom came back when old enough. She was an American citizen but did not know a word of English. Stuy Town was also being built while I was at SHS. When windows were open in the warm weather, all I could hear was a pneumatic drill. When, some years later, I was at NYU I heard the noise of the construction of the Law School.
