Yes, for about three years. I had gotten a master's in journalism, but then, as now, jobs in journalism were hard to come by (now it's 100 times worse) I took the test for "housing assistant," or entry-level manager in NYCHA, and soon found myself as a housing assistant in the shlocky Edenwald Houses. Rocco Micari, our training-class teacher, warned us, "your first jobs in the Housing Authority will be the jobs nobody else wants, the worst jobs." After a year, I was able to transfer, and transfer I did, to the Section 8 Program unit at 250 Broadway, which, of course, is out of the Bronx. I had a lot of great times and made a lot of friends, but eventually I said "it's now or never" as far as my journalism degree was concerned, started to look out of town, got a job on a weekly in Indainapolis and bid farewell to NYCHA. The job in Indiana was a year-long job, and thank God I'm not there anymore, that's all I can say!!!
