I was on the Major Deegan yesterday and veered off, driving through my old Kingsbridge neighborhood. I drove up and down the streets, from Jerome Avenue to Sedgwick Avenue and from Kingsbridge Road to the Reservoir. I lived on Webb Avenue, the corner of 197th Street. Every building I passed reminded me of an old friend from childhood. I left the neighborhood in 1967 and have made this journey many times before as my Mother was in rehab for a while on Kingsbridge Road. Nothing much ever changed, but this trip back was different. Everything looked older and more tired. And, of course, the absence of children playing in the streets and adults sitting outside - which was our life back then - was very apparent. I always look back on my years living there with great fondness but the neighborhood has changed and so have I.
