2721 Morris Ave/1940: Tina/baby Wm; maiden name?

It is a great blessing to be able to be a registered user of the Bronx Board. Born in Queens, my love of the Bronx has existed more than 6 decades, from the time I was old enough to understand that my father (who died in 2004 in NJ at age 93) had been born and raised in the Bronx. This past October, I commemorated the 100th anniversary of the death from the Spanish influenza of my grandmother, a Bronx resident, who left behind my father as the oldest of three young children.

Now well into retirement, I have spent the last two years doing a family history--only to discover a close family relative who lived at 2721 Morris Ave. at the time of the 1940 census. The child's name was William Hassalevris, born in October 1939; his mother's name was "Tina," a 20 year old who lived in the Bronx at least from 1935 and was born in Maine. Cross-checking Maine birth records with any variation of "Tina" living in NY in 1940, I have eliminated any number of likely "Tina's" but still cannot come close to determining the identity of "my" "Tina" from Maine.

Because I cannot find NYC marriage index information, I am at a loss to find Tina's maiden name.

Someone suggested I hire a private detective to find out who she was by having someone track down the woman and son who lived in the apartment at 2721 Morris Ave. in 1940.

As someone on a fixed income, I do not have the funds to pay for a wild goose chase. I have no idea what such a search would cost and what would be the chances it would yield any results. Is there someone on The Bronx Board's Nostalgia Message Board who would give me the truth? Is it possible to find a tenant's name from 1940? Is there anyone possibly alive who could know/remember who lived there? If a private detective is my only recourse, is there a reputable one I might contact?

Thank you for your honest counsel. I have exhausted all the genealogical material I can find, and at my age, I'm not sure I'll be around when the 1950 census is released, and even if I were, I cannot begin to know that I could find Tina in 1950; perhaps she would have been deceased by then. Once I know Tina's identity, I will have a better chance at finding out what happened to her son, since it is likely that post-1940 they went by a different last name (hopefully her maiden name).

Please know that I would not be reaching out to you if finding the identity/whereabouts of "Tina" and her son (who would be 80 this October) weren't so important/weighing so heavily on my heart. Thank you!...I would love to talk to someone from The Bronx Board's Nostalgia Message Board about this quest if that were ever possible!

Thank you! Every blessing!
