Around 1955, when I lived near St. Mary's park, an "old" super (younger than I am now!) told some of us kids that there was a lake in the park years before. I didn't think about this until I recently got a copy of "South Bronx" by Bill Twomey. On p. 93 is a photo of a bandstand in the park taken about 1910 showing PS27 in the background. The caption says "A freshwater pond had previously occupied the site". So it took me over 60 years to confirm that 45 years before 1955 there indeed was a lake. Did anyone else confirm things you remember about the Bronx many, many years later?
