When I first moved into my own place (in NYC), I moved to a top-floor studio apartment in Washington Heights. I never noticed anything unusual about the heat or the cold, and there was an elevator (although it often broke down). The fact that it was on the top floor may have made me more vulnerable in that someone unknown once went to the roof, climbed the short distance down the fire escape and broke into my apartment, taking my electric piano, my camera and some spare change. This was in a building in which every apartment had been broken into at least once. Now its a pricey co-op.
