Did a Google search on the Harlem River and the East River. In the past the water pollution in both was abysmal (most of 20th century). Raw sewage was dumped into the East River for many years. In recent years both "Rivers" have improved because of legislation and cleanups but still probably far from pristine. BTW the Harlem River is physically connected to the East River. So it was probably pretty polluted at Orchard Beach when the tide from the East River was going in the direction of Orchard Beach. I did notice when swimming in the waters off Orchard Beach that it could be pretty murky and at other times very clear in the 1950s. This was not because of waves since there was little to no wave action at Orchard Beach.
