My Bronx Birthday Gift to Myself

Yesterday was my Birthday - so I gave myself the Gift of The Bronx!!

I took a 3 am ATMRAK train, (I carried pikshas of Mom, Nonna, Auntie and Sis with me to accompany me and tohonor them on this Mother's Day) - arrived in Manhattan before 7 am, walked around Central Park -- and THEN, I went to the Bronx-- D train, 4 train, 2 train, BX 12, and there I was on White Plains Road under the El, beaming with joy. What a sunshiney GLORIOUS day! The green grass was sparkling, the sky wuz blue, everything was beautiful! I was back HOOOME!!!!

The first thing I looked for was the bar under the El, that Sis and I, as liddle kids, used to stand in front of while waiting for someone to open the door and stagger out -- becuz also rushing out of this door would be this huge rush of hot air laced with the fumous stench of mixed drinks-- that was our cheap thrill. Alas, there is now a 7-11 in its place.

The old candy store where I'd buy my hot rod magazines in 1959 is still there, different layout. Got a NY Daily News tribute paper to Derek Jeter, whose #2 uniform was being retired -- had it not been happening at 730 pm I woulda been there (I had to work the next day in DC).

Anyway, 615 PPkway is being renovated -- lots of nets and dropcloths and metal braces/scaffolding -- gee I guess I will just have to return once it's done!!! So I went to the BX12 bus stop and found out that I had to stick my bus card in a slot in a vending machine and get a receipt before I could board the double-length bus. Some old guy was yelling instructions (in a nice way) in Spanish at me ("Mira este! Empuje Aqui!! Su Tarjeta! Su Tarjeta!")- we had a nice laugh over that and then I was able to legally board the bus to go to -- The Bronx Botanical gardens!!

Happy smiling moms being proudly escorted by their grownup kids -- or happy beaming moms pushing their baby carriages and one Dad guy telling his daughter SYLVIA (Me mama's name!) to behave. He told me Sylvia was his grandmother's name. I went to the old hothouse where Grandpa Giuseppe had one of his last photos taken while sitting on the steps (1931, I was not born then), walked around-- KNEW I had to come back -- bought a couple of liiddle plants to take home with me and then went to....

The Bronx Zoo!! Walked around until I was ready to plotz and then went to...

Arthur Avenue - resuscitated myself with two slices abeetz and a lemon ice and then took the BX12 on my way back to Penn Station. Got home at midnite (DC). What a Great adventure! ( I also saw two Bronx street cats who graced me with their backward glances as they ran about their business!!) It was one of my BESTIST birthdays ever!! Next time each place will be a day trip in itself -- anyone wanna go back with me?
