Favorite 1960s attraction in the Bronx for you Return to topicsPost to this topic

Was it the Bronx Zoo, Orchard Beach, Yankee stadium, Poe Park, Krums or some other place?

Bronx Zoo and (not rellay the Bronx) but Palisades Amusement Park was the best for me and my sister.

The Paradise Theater, especially in the balcony with Sharon from Davidson Ave. ;-)

For me it would easily be the NYU Campus on University Avenue. Spent alot of time playing basketball on the lower courts and football on their campus field when their Security team didn't chase us. When Security did try to round us up that in and of itself became a new game called 'chase'. We used to use the foam landing pits used by the track high jumpers to tag team wrestle in. Also got to use their pool in the summer time through a neighbor who was a student there. It wasn't all fun and games though as i did a few book reports based on people in the Hall Of Famous Americans... it was after all an institution of higher education, lol. Many great memories of the NYU campus.

For me, in addition to the ones I mentioned above, another attraction was fishing on the Bronx River under the bridge near Fordham road and Pelham Parkway.

Another one was Crotona Park. The lake, the handball courts, the baseball field

Also my neighborhood (Southern Blvd & Tremont Ave) had 7 movie theaters within walking distance. Ritz, Chester, Vogue, Elsmere, De Luxe, Dover, Fairmont

A movie would start in the Bronx at Loew's Paradise and move down the chain lowering the admission price at each theater. Paradise, Fairmont, Elsmere was the chain. The Vogue was independent and also showed movies from the RKO Chester. The Dover, Ritz and DeLuxe were also indies and showed whatever they liked.

Very interesting Milton!!

I believe the daily venue in all those movie theaters was 2 feature films, 5 cartoons and the newsreel.

Was it .35 cents admission?

I could write a book on this. A double feature was the main "A" movie and a "B" movie. The "A" movie was the main attraction. The "B" movie was a minor movie like Boston Blackie, or maybe a one hour "Western". Another feature in the second run theaters were the Serials. It was a sin to miss a chapter by not going to the same theater every Saturday. Another action that the theater may do is run the A and B movie with all the extras during the day.The movie plot was a magnet for the kids. At night they ran a completely different movie or two which was geared to the adults. Every theater had matinee prices and higher evening prices. The

matinee prices for kids were as low as 10 cents. One Saturday I stood on line at the Elsmere to see Gary Cooper in Sgt. York. When they hung up the sign the price at gone to 11 Cents. I had to run home, I lived on the same block, and acquire another penny. I usually had a nickel for the refreshment stand but nothing extra that Saturday. This was in the year 1941.

4out of 5 Orchard Beach, Bronx Zoo and Krum's. Walking to Alexanders where my mom worked,
was broken up with an ice cream soda at Krum's.

The Circle movie theater was 11 cents on Saturday mornings still, in 1951!

Loved going to the Whitestone Drive-In.

Reference ID: bx92580

We lived a few streets away from the Whitestone drive-in. The Manager didn't mind us kids walking through a back gate. We'd sit near the candy concession and see the mpvies. As long as we didn't cause trouble we were allowed in. This was in the 50's.
