Best Neighbood in the Bronx (1950-1970) Return to topicsPost to this topic

All things considered which neighborhood was the best one for a child to grow up in The Bronx?
What is your criteria?

For example in the neighborhood around Tremont Ave & Southern Blvd you had three great parks (Bronx Park, Crotona Park & Poe Park), five movie theaters within walking distance, plenty of candy stores, the Bronx river and it was safe to venture out to anyplace at any hour.

Also shopping and restaurants.Tremont Avenue and 180th Street were 2 gigantic shopping malls. Restaurant cuisine was Chinese, Dairy, Deli, Knish shop. Education was a priority.

West Tremont: Block and half to Jerome movie.......walking distance to elementary and JHS......bus stop
down the block......shopes down the block from drugstore to candy store , deli, to beauty parlor and barber shop.....and Chinese laundry and a block from Burnside Ave where you shopped for groceries,
bakery, appetizing store, hardware store....Chinese restaurant......we could walk to NYU and the
Aqueduct and the library but it was several blocks away....we had hills to skate down and a hospital
at the end of the block. It was our world

Bainbridge at that time was probably the best.It was unknown to almost every Bronx kid I went to high school with.It was truly like a small town where every one knew each other yet it was the Bronx with four great parks in walking distance[Van Cortland,Bronx Park,Mosholou and the Oval}We had all the stores every neighborhood had and the zoo ,Botanical Gardens,Arthur Ave. and the original Montefiore hospital a little further walk. Also De Witt Clinton High Science High and Evander nearby. Great Catholic & Jewish schools too Two bowling alleys and wide streets for stickball etc.We didn't realize how lucky we were

Agreed, whether it was called Bainbridge or Norwood. We also had 3 subway lines with 5 stations serving the neighborhood, plenty of shopping, two movie theaters, and a library.

Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road area-- anything a kid could want, oh and even those adults too. Movie theatres, parks to play in (3, all within viewing and walking distance) candy stores, and the El to take you ANYWHERE you wanted to go.
