What your father and mine did was a poor effort to cool us off. Refrigerated A/C was available back then but my Dad didn't have the money to pay for that. All those units did was pore more moisture into the air and increase the humidity. A bit of a cool breeze did help a bit. Here in New Mexico we have actual units doing what our Dads tried to do back then. They are called SWAMP COOLERS and with the VERY low humidity here in NM it works like a charm. The wet cool air flows through our ducts and cools the entire home. I's much cheaper than refrigerated air as it does not does push up your electric bill.
