In the summer of '57 my father brought home this big cube-shaped fan that had a slot where you could insert ice cubes. It was the closest we ever got to air conditioning. We all sat on the couch and let it blow over us while we watched tv. To this day I never knew where he got the money to buy it on his meager salary. I assume it fell off a truck.
