That's because Suffolk County is 75 miles long and has many different towns and localities. Officially, Queens has four post office designations: Flushing, Jamaica, Long Island City, and Far Rockaway. However, common use refers to the myriad of neighborhoods: Bayside, Astoria, Queens Village, Woodside, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Jackson Heights, et al. and all mail so addressed always seems to be delivered with no problem.

This model has its roots in Queens starting out as a collection of villages before significant development, without a single unifying identity like Brooklyn. The only other place like it would be the outer communities within the city of Los Angeles that still retain their original identities (mostly in the San Fernando Valley): Van Nuys, Mission Hills, Encino, Hollywood, San Pedro, et al.
