on Saturday, February 28th 2026: In Reply to: Re: Riverdale Elitism posted by Danny P on Thursday, January 22nd 2026: On January 7, 1963, the post office designation passed from "New York, NY 104xx" to "Bronx, NY 104xx", presumably as a point of pride for Bronxites. While it was always "Brooklyn, NY" that was because Brooklyn had been a separate city until the five boroughs consolidation in 1898. The Bronx, however, had not been, and its street numbering system is but an extension of that of Manhattan. With the slow gentrification of the south Bronx, I do think it will be only a matter of time before its residents start agitating for the return of the more prestigious "New York, NY" designation. Plus ca change and all that. As for Riverdale, back then I had a friend who lived there and enjoyed mocking the community's pretentiousness and its residents claiming to live in "West Riverdale-on-the-Hudson, 10471".
